WMS Formally Recognized as a VA School to Watch

Woodbridge Middle School celebrated its distinguished recognition as Virginia School to Watch on Monday, June 15.  The day started with school-wide outside activities, in which all students and staff participated in games, food, and fun.  That evening the formal ceremony was held in the newly renovated auditorium, in which WMS was officially recognized by the School to Watch Association.

The ceremony included separate performances by the WMS 8th grade Orchestra and Chorus, and then concluded with the band, chorus and orchestra jointly performing God Bless America.  PWCS Associate Superintendent for Middle Schools Dr. Catherine “Pat” Puttre presented WMS Principal Skyles Calhoun with the official certificate of recognition, and then on behalf of the WMS Community, eighth graders Gabrielle Powell and Ruben Salas were presented with a banner by the Virginia Schools to Watch Director Sandra Dutemple.

Later this month, WMS will again be honored as a School to Watch at the National Forum Annual STW Conference in Crystal City.  At this conference, WMS will proudly share their expertise with conference attendees.

2009 Summer Reading Program
The purpose of the Summer Reading Program is to encourage students to enjoy quality literature and to continue developing their independent reading skills.  This is a voluntary program, and students who participate are required to complete a minimum number of two readings.  Students will receive an extra A (100) for each book completed, for a total of two.  Completion of the summer reading will be recorded for students by the end of the second week of the 2009-2010 school year.

Student Journalists Needed for PWCS-TV
PWCS-TV is launching an i-Reporter program this summer.  Participants will be reporting on what PWCS students are seeing and doing. If the story is among those selected for production, PWCS-TV will help students record their report, and feature the story on PWCS-TV!  (Comcast Channel 18/ Verizon FiOS Channel 36 or streaming on pwcstv.com)  This is a wonderful opportunity for students to incorporate a learning activity into their summer vacation. See the PWCS-Tv i- Reporter Flyer for more details.

EduLink will be down throughout the month of July
The PWCS Office of Information Technology Services (IT) has announced that Intouch Online (ITOL), also known as EduLink, will not be accessible from July 1–July 31.

New Resource to be Included on 2009 English SOL Scores
This year the 2009 English SOL score will include a Lexile Level.  The Lexile Level is based on the SOL score on the English portion of the SOL and approximates reading levels.  Knowing your child’s Lexile range can help you locate books that your child might enjoy reading.  Read more by clicking on the following links:  English   Español

Same Gender Classes

Woodbridge Middle School is proud to offer same gender classes.  Sixth, seventh and eighth grade students have the option of same gender classes for science, social studies, math, and language arts.  Parents are given the opportunity to opt students in as a part of the standard class selection form.   Students are enrolled by selecting Same Gender classes when making course selections.  In addition, parents have the option of transferring their son/daughter in from other schools, as long as they are able to provide transportation both to and from school.

For information feel free to e-mail Skyles Calhoun,
WMS principal, at calhousa@pwcs.edu.  Research has shown that there are tremendous differences in how boys and girls learn. Teachers who are trained to teach the way boys and girls learn best can increase the rate of academic achievement.  Our staff has been trained by one of the leading experts in the field, Dr. Leonard Sax, author of Why Gender Matters:  What Parents and Teachers Need to Know about the Emerging Science of Sex Differences

For further information about this fascinating research, you may wish to visit www.singlesexschools.org.  This website is hosted by the National Association for Single Sex Public Education (NASSPE).  Dr. Sax is the founder of this organization.
