Same Gender Classes

Woodbridge Middle School is now offering same gender classes.  Sixth, seventh and eighth grade students now have the option of same gender classes for science, social studies, math, and language arts.  Parents are given the opportunity to opt students into this educational option as a part of the standard class selection form.   Students are enrolled by selecting Same Gender classes when making course selections.  For information feel free to e-mail Skyles Calhoun, WMS principal, at calhousa@pwcs.eduClick here to see Mr. Calhoun's presentation.  The PWCS Office of Program Evaluation conducted an evaluation of the same program at WMS by surveying students and teachers.  Results may be seen here.  In addition, WMS's groundbreaking single gender initiative was spotlighted in Prince William County Schools' television news program School FocusIt can be watched here.

Research has shown that there are tremendous differences in how boys and girls learn. Teachers who are trained to teach the way boys and girls learn best can increase the rate of academic achievement.  Our staff has been trained by one of the leading experts in the field, Dr. Leonard Sax, author of Why Gender Matters:  What Parents and Teachers Need to Know about the Emerging Science of Sex Differences.

For further information about this fascinating research, you may wish to visit www.singlesexschools.org.  This website is hosted by the National Association for Single Sex Public Education (NASSPE).  Dr. Sax is the founder of this organization.
